Mini-interview: Didier Normand

Why paint? If you didn’t paint, what would you do?

I have been passionate about drawing since I was a child, and have been teaching myself to paint since 1983. If I didn’t paint, I would spend more time playing my Bass.

If you could hunt any speculative fiction creature ever imagined (except one of your own), would you? Why?

No. I do not have enough time; Jason is waiting for my painting.

If you could have any speculative fiction creature ever imagined (except one of your own) as a pet, would you? Why?

Yes — dragons. So I could travel faster in the air and have no need of petrol. I would have to enlarge my garage, though. Then I would also have a model to paint.

You are on a holodeck: You’re sitting in an intergalactic bar, sipping your favorite beverage, waiting expectantly for someone to take a seat at your table. Which author from any era does?

Frank Frazetta (or Simon Bisley).

Why?

Because I don’t know him.

What do you talk about or do?

I just ask him to paint a canvas and watch him doing it.

More importantly, which chair does he sit in?

The chair in front of his easel, that’s most practical.

What brought out the image(s) you created for RotB? What did you see and discover in each assignment that you just had to get out on the canvas?

A friend on Myspace told Jason that I could do the cover he needed. A new thing for me was to paint something that already existed in a book. One has to do exactly what is described. That’s an interesting challenge.

What appealed to you about being included in Rage of the Behemoth?

I like Fantasy.

Do you paint before/with anyone (family member or friend)?

No.

Quick: For each of the below, what’s your first thought in regards to the future of genre fiction:

Reading Formats: Print, electronic, audio, or interactive?

Print.

Preference for reading/writing: Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, Fantasy Fiction, Horror Fiction?

Fantasy Fiction.

Thank you for some totally awesome cover art for Rage of the Behemoth, Didier! And of course for suffering through this interview in English as well :)

About The Author

Jason
Jason M. Waltz is the founder and sole operator of RBE. A passion for heroic adventure fantasy drove him from comfortably reading it to sometimes writing it to occasionally reviewing it to carefully editing it to enthusiastically publishing it. Jason believes two things about the state of genre fiction: there will soon be a resurgence in the popularity of short fiction and in the popularity of heroic fantasy adventure, to include Sword & Sorcery. Jason plans for RBE to be a driving force in both.
