So what’s different about a Clash of Steel anthology?

Q: Are the Clash of Steel (CoS) anthologies different from the annual “Rogue Blades Presents” signature anthologies? How?

A: Yes. Differences:

  • RB Presents signature anthologies
    • Open to all heroic fantasy adventure tales along the heroic genre spectrum
    • Magic in all aspects is acceptable and works across the board for all characters with no specific restrictions
    • Allows longer works with stories of 3,000 words to novella-length (anthology-specific)
    • Allows only a single work per author
    • Rather closely defined parameters specific to the orientation of each anthology (e.g., genres and eras)
    • Allows for exploration and experimentation of concepts and styles
    • THEMATIC - meaning each story fits within the whole of the anthology by relating to a common conceptual topic identified by a title, e.g., Rage of the Behemoth
  • CoS Series
    • Concentrates on the steel of bared blades – a closer adhesion to Sword & Sorcery
    • Sorcery restricted in amount and who has access (the antagonists), though protagonists can use magical/divine items – with distaste
    • Concentrates upon shorter stories with lengths of 2,500 – 6,000 words
    • Allows multiple works from individual authors
    • More loosely defined parameters not restricted in era or genres so long as stories remain solely within the genres RBE seeks to publish and their outcomes depend upon the steel of Sword & Sorcery
    • Prefers the known and expected – not too interested in experimentation of styles or concepts
    • THEMED - meaning each story consists of a unifying, dominant topic identified by an unambiguous one- or two- word title, e.g., Assassins

The way the editor sees it is thus:

  1. Every CoS story could fit into the proper signature anthology.
  2. Not every signature anthology story could fit in an appropriate CoS anthology – if there even was one.

About The Author

Jason
Jason M. Waltz is the founder and sole operator of RBE. A passion for heroic adventure fantasy drove him from comfortably reading it to sometimes writing it to occasionally reviewing it to carefully editing it to enthusiastically publishing it. Jason believes two things about the state of genre fiction: there will soon be a resurgence in the popularity of short fiction and in the popularity of heroic fantasy adventure, to include Sword & Sorcery. Jason plans for RBE to be a driving force in both.
